Observer Corps – Greenville County

Observer Corps is made up of League members who are curious about how local government works and the issues being discussed in our community. Members attend meetings strictly as observers, not participants, and then complete a short form or write a brief report about what was covered. These reports are shared on our League website so the whole membership can stay informed.

The Observer Corps currently attends Greenville County Council and School Board of Trustees meetings, but can include any local body of elected or appointed officials. One of the most effective ways to help ensure decisions are made in the public interest is to promote government transparency through routine and visible observation of these meetings. By showing up, we remind officials that the community is watching and engaged.

Why Join?

• Be a presence for the League. Represent the League at public meetings, be visible in the community, and build relationships with local officials and fellow attendees.
• See government in action. Learn firsthand how local boards and councils operate and the effort that goes into their work.
• Promote civic awareness. Help demonstrate why local elections and decisions impact daily life as much as those at the state or national level.
• Keep members informed. Share updates on issues facing Greenville County.

Who Can Join?

Any League member with a little time to spare! No special background is needed—just interest and willingness to observe.

When Are Meetings?

• Greenville County Council – twice a month on Tuesday evenings
• Greenville County School Board – twice a month on Tuesday evenings

Agendas are posted online ahead of time for each group.

Training & Support

All volunteers will receive training and a simple form to guide their reporting. The more volunteers we have, the lighter the load for everyone. Coordination of observers will be managed by Jo Singer (gjosinger@aol.com).
